Schools

A Voluntary Grammar is a post-primary school that is wholly and independently managed by a Board of Governors.

Boards consist of persons appointed in line with each school’s scheme of management (usually trustees or foundation governors) along with representatives of parents and teachers and, in most cases, members appointed by the Department of Education. A school Principal normally sits on the Board in an ex-officio capacity. The Board of Governors of a Voluntary Grammar school is the employing authority, and, as such, is responsible for the employment of all staff (both teaching and non-teaching) in its school. Voluntary Grammars are both Catholic and non-denominational. They are both single-sex schools and co-educational.
